Maple Group has pushed its offer deadline for the proposed takeover of Toronto Stock Exchange operator () to February 29, the consortium said Tuesday.

Maple said it is in on-going discussions with regulators and has made numerous submissions including submitting a proposed CDS pricing model in a bid to get the approvals it needs to complete the deal, which values TMX at roughly $3.8 billion.

The board of directors continues to unanimously recommend shareholders accept and tender their shares under the Maple offer.

Maple, which is a consortium of 13 Canadian financial institutions, also plans to acquire alternative trading platform Alpha Group, and securities clearinghouse, the Canadian Depository for Securities, owned by the bidding banks.

Critics have said the plan to merge the CDS clearing house and the alternative Alpha trading system with TMX’s operations could create a monopoly that would favour the banks and insurance companies, who would also own the exchange.

Regulators have been concerned about the agreement giving the proposed organization too much control of the prices of stock trades and other fees.

Regulatory approval from Canada's competition body, as well as provincial securities watchdogs, is needed for the deal to go through.

Currently, Canada does not have a single securities regulator such as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission or the Financial Services Authority in the U.K.

In June, the London Stock Exchange (LSE:LON) abandoned its friendly $3.3 billion offer to acquire TMX due to insufficient shareholder support.

"We continue to believe the Maple transaction will substantially benefit Canada’s capital markets and its participants, improve the ability of market participants to manage risk and encourage the development of new offerings," Maple’s Luc Bertrand said in a statement.

’s chief executive, Tom Kloet, reiterated: "This transaction is the right path forward for and provides important potential benefits for Canada’s capital markets and capital markets participants."

Shares of rose 22 cents to $42.42 Tuesday afternoon in Toronto.

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. (WCCO) – A woman is dead after being hit by a car in Maple Grove near the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes mall Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Authorities said the incident happened early Tuesday afternoon near Elm Creek Boulevard and Hemlock Lane, a busy area near shopping malls and downtown Maple Grove. Captain Keith Terlinden with Maple Grove police said a citizen contacted police about a vehicle driving erratically and swerving in the area.

When authorities arrived to the intersection of Elm Creek Boulevard and Hemlock Lane, they discovered an accident scene. Witnesses in the area told police a woman standing on the sidewalk was hit by a vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

No information has been released about the victim or the driver of the car at this time. Police are also investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in the accident. The accident remains under investigation at this time, with more information expected to be released later Tuesday afternoon.

But it sort of tastes like…well, nothing. So you need some dressing to go with it, right?

NORMAN, Okla. – Kendric Maple of the 10th-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team has been chosen as the Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Week for matches from Jan. 23-29, announced Monday by the league office. Throughout that span, he helped the Sooners upend No. 23 Virginia Tech on Friday, Jan. 27, and rally to defeat 14th-ranked Lehigh on Sunday, Jan. 29, by downing two ranked opponents.

It marks the third career conference honor for the redshirt-sophomore from Wichita, Kan., who also won the award on Jan. 2 and was named the Wrestler of the Month for November. He is the first wrestler to take home three honors in one season since Jordan Oliver (Oklahoma State) accomplished the feat in 2010-11.

“We are very proud of Kendric Maple,” Mark Cody said. “He has made a major contribution in every dual meet win that we’ve accumulated this year. We look forward to his continued success throughout the rest of the season.”

Maple has accrued a 22-1 overall record and is 13-1 in dual action on the year. The nation’s third-ranked 141-pounder opened action over the weekend with the first of his two major decision victories against Virginia Tech’s 19th-ranked Zach Neibert. PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Penguins will return to action Tuesday night after a week-long break for the NHL All-Star Game.

The Penguins were on a roll before the All-Star Game, having won seven straight games. Things were looking up, but some alarming news came out regarding Sidney Crosby’s injury status minutes before the Skills Competition Saturday night.

The news broke that Crosby had suffered a neck injury in the area of the C1 and C2 vertebrae. When that injury occurred is unclear at this time. According to Dr. Robert S. Bray, is has already healed.

According to a TSN report, the Penguins were unaware of the neck injury until it was diagnosed by Dr. Bray last week.

Crosby hopped on the ice with Jordan Staal and Simon Despres for about 45 minutes before the Penguins’ practice Monday afternoon.

There is still no timetable for his return as a third independent doctor is reviewing his case at this time.

As for the rest of the team, they will look to keep their winning streak going when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight at CONSOL Energy Center.

The Leafs come into the game having won their last two games. They are also tied for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with the New Jersey Devils.

Joffrey Lupul is having a fantastic season and leads the team with 52 points (20 goals, 32 assists).

However, sniper Phil Kessel is hot on his heels with 51 points and leads the team in goals with 26.

After those two, the Leafs’ balanced scoring attack shows up as seven other players on the roster have at least 20 points this season.

In goal, Jonas Gustavsson is expected to get the nod against the Penguins.

Gustavsson (16-10-0, 2.73 GAA, .910 save percentage) got off to a rocky start this season, but has been better lately and has three shutouts in the month of January.

Against the Penguins, Gustavsson is 2-2 with a 3.76 GAA and a .882 save percentage.

For Pittsburgh, their winning streak has propelled them into a tie with the Ottawa Senators for fifth place in the conference. They also trail Philadelphia by three points and the New York Rangers by six points in the Atlantic Division.

Evegni Malkin isn’t just leading the team in points, he’s on top of the entire league right now with 58 points (26 goals, 32 assists).

Keep in mind, Malkin has played in 42 of the Penguins’ 49 games this season as well.

James Neal continues to lead the way in goals for the Pens with 27, which matches a career-high set in 2009-10 with Dallas.

Six other players have already reached the 20-point plateau this season as well.

In goal, Marc-Andre Fleury (26-12-2, 2.25 GAA, .913 save percentage) has been a workhorse this season having appeared in 42 games already.

Against the Leafs, Fleury is 10-7-3 with a 3.11 GAA and a .892 save percentage.

This will be the second time these two teams have met this season. Toronto won the first matchup 4-3 on Oct. 29 in Toronto

The Good: 6th in the league with 3.02 goals/game so far, Toronto is not lacking in any offense this season. The main engines have been Kessel and Lupul but they also have nine players with 7 goals or more (compared to Pittsburgh who only currently has seven such players with 7+ goals), so it's been a diverse contribution from the lineup. The Maple Leafs are also 5th in the league with PP effeciency (19.6%) so they have made the most of their chances.

The Bad: As good as some of the offensive metrics are, the defensive metrics are as bad. Toronto's 30th in the league in PK % with 75.0%- and there are only 30 teams in the league. Their 2.96 goals allowed/game ranks 26th. Also after a fast start, the Leafs are 7-6-1 after the Christmas break and have slid down the conference standings.

-Frustrating year for Army, he missed the first 23 game of the season with an ankle sprain and then just nine games into his season he broke his foot and worse suffered a concussion and has been out since December 17th. Best wishes to Colby to recover and return soon.

-The once truculent Leafs are now tied for 23rd in the league in fights with just 15 on the year (compare to 50, 57 and 52 in the previous three season). Brian Burke tearfully even waived his enforcer Colton Orr and decried the current state of the NHL. So unless there's a big hit or tempers boil over, don't look much fisticuffs tonight.

Hidden Stat: Toronto is 16-8-1 when they score the first goal, 9-11-4 when they allow the first goal. And when they lead after two periods, the Leafs are a perfect 18-0-0 on the season.

PensBurgh 3 Keys:

1 - Tame The Monster- Jonas Gustavsson has taken the ball (puck?) and ran with it lately for Toronto, but in four career appearanced in Pittsburgh he's got a 3.76 GAA and .882 save percentage to go along with a 2-2-0 record. If the Pens can keep those numbers high, they'll have a good shot.

2- Win the Special Teams battle - As evidenced by high goals for and goals against, and a high-ranked PP and low-ranked PK, Toronto is no stranger to seeing the red light go on in both directions. If the Penguins have a 0 for 5 or 1 for 6 power play night, they probably aren't going to get the win. Pittsburgh needs to make Toronto pay if they take take penalties, simple as that.

3- Who left their legs on the beach? - It's the first game back from the all-star break and a lot of the guys on both sides caught some sun and well deserved R&R in the past week. Which team can find their legs first and get back in the swing of the grind of an NHL regular season? Vacation's over and it's time to go back to work in the push to the playoffs.
